Elizabeth Blackwell became interested in medicine at a time when there were no women doctors in the United States. Twenty-nine medical schools rejected her before she was accepted by Geneva Medical School in 1847. The male students ostracized her and teachers refused permission for her to attend medical demonstrations. However, despite these efforts, she graduated first in her class in 1849 and became the first woman to qualify as a doctor in the United States. 106 She would not stay in the ditch.

The restricted pace and place for women entering higher education in general paralleled their pursuit of theological studies. Oberlin College, from its founding, was open to women. But Antoinette Brown (Hartwell), who was the first woman to gain access to theological training, was actively discouraged from entering the seminary. An Oberlin professor wrote in the school journal that women were emotional, illogical, physically delicate, weak-voiced, vain, dependent and ordained by God to be mothers and homemakers, therefore making his case that Brown and others should be prohibited from attending the seminary. She persisted and was finally admitted, albeit to a hostile environment where she was prevented from speaking in the classroom or pulpit. When she graduated in 1850, she was not allowed to sit in front of an audience, receive a degree or be recommended for ordination. She observed the ceremony from the audience and did not even have the privilege of having her name listed on the graduation record. Despite this unfortunate experience, Brown was ordained in 1853, served a Congregational church and preached until she was ninety years old. 107 Her persistence and drive were too great for the ditch.
